Centro Studi Poltronova is presenting its collection in the spaces of Contemporary Cluster, to celebrare the fiftieth anniversary of two cult items, Ettore Sottsass jr.’s Ultrafragola mirror, and De Pas, D’Urbino and Lomazzi’s Joe armchair. The gallery in Rome will be the venue for the world premiere of the new edition of Joe, and two brand new items: Cessato allarme clothes-stand by De Pas, D’Urbino and Lomazzi and Canton bench by Franco Raggi, as well as the 50 Special Limited Edition of Archizoom’s Superonda sofa, presented at the 2018 Triennale.
Famous items in the collection include the lamps Passiflora and Gherpe by Superstudio, and Sanremo by Archizoom. Sofas of the Saratoga series, designed by Elena and Massimo Vignelli, the Superstudio Sofo seats and the Mies armchair by Archizoom. The Mies armchair, with its geometric shape which loses its definition with use, provides a close link to the other show hosted at the same time by Contemporary Cluster, La casa non domestica [The Un-domestic House].
The La casa non domestica, curated by Gabriele Mastrigli, takes its clue from the celebrated 1971 issue of the Milan magazine, IN – Argomenti e immagini di design, dedicated to the theme of “destroying the object”. According to the curators of the issue, the Florentine groups Archizoom and Superstudio, objects are no longer made bearing specific meanings. Destroying them means challenging the traditional formal structures of the built environment, releasing the very notion of design from any predetermined relationship between form and function, either on a material or symbolic level.
The show also hosts works by some of the artists who were invited to share in writing for the issue: the Mies armchair by Archizoom, the Superbox Torno subito by Ettore Sottsass jr., the Luxor bench by Superstudio and the Commutatore (from Sistema Disequilibrante) by Ugo La Pietra. These four items made between 1967 and 1970 will be on display together with documents of the time (videos, drawings, posters, photos – including a contribution by Stefano Graziani) which investigate the way people used to live their homes during that critical turning point in the history of Western society, shifting attention form functions and objects to rituals and attitudes.
Two projects born inside the School of Architecture and Design of the University of Camerino – which contributed to producing the show and lent some items – give us an update on the theme of these “un-domestic” objects, critically analysing the concept of the house as a mediation between its inhabitant and his or her way of living, extending borders and, ultimately, measuring the possibility of imagining another way of living.

Nell’anno del cinquantesimo anniversario di due oggetti divenuti cult, lo specchio Ultrafragola di Ettore Sottsass jr. e la poltrona Joe di De Pas, D’Urbino, Lomazzi, il Centro Studi Poltronova presenta la sua collezione negli spazi di Contemporary Cluster. La galleria romana diventa la cornice in cui mostrare in anteprima assoluta le edizioni speciali dedicate alla poltrona Joe, le nuove edizioni dell’appendiabiti Cessato allarme di De Pas, D’Urbino Lomazzi e della panca Canton di Franco Raggi, vengono inoltre proposte le 50 Special Limited Edition del divano Superonda di Archizoom, presentate in Triennale nel 2018. Tra i celebri oggetti della collezione troviamo le lampade di Superstudio, Passiflora e Gherpe e quella di Archizoom Sanremo. I divani della serie Saratoga, disegnati da Elena e Massimo Vignelli, le sedute di Superstudio Sofo e la poltrona Mies di Archizoom. Ed è proprio la poltrona Mies, con la sua geometria insita nella forma che perde di rigore nell'utilizzo, a essere il trait d'union con la mostra La casa non domestica, anch'essa in contemporanea negli spazi di Contemporary Cluster.
La casa non domestica, a cura di Gabriele Mastrigli, prende le mosse dal celebre numero del 1971 della rivista milanese “IN – Argomenti e immagini di design”, dedicato al tema della "distruzione dell'oggetto". Secondo i
curatori del numero, i gruppi fiorentini Archizoom e Superstudio, gli oggetti non sono più destinati a portare avanti significati specifici. Distruggerli significa sfidare le tradizionali strutture formali dell'ambiente costruito, svuotando la nozione stessa di progetto da qualsiasi relazione prestabilita tra forme e funzioni, tanto sul piano materiale che simbolico. Nella mostra sono presentate opere di alcuni tra gli artisti invitati a contribuire al numero: la poltrona Mies di Archizoom, il Superbox “Torno subito” di Ettore Sottsass jr., la panca Luxor di Superstudio e il Commutatore (dal Sistema Disequilibrante) di Ugo La Pietra. Si tratta di quattro oggetti realizzati tra il 1967 e il 1970, corredati da documenti dell’epoca (video, disegni, poster, fotografie – tra cui il contributo di Stefano Graziani), che indagano la natura delle pratiche dell’abitare in quel passaggio storico di crisi della società occidentale, spostando l’attenzione dalle funzioni e dagli oggetti ai riti e alle attitudini. Due progetti redatti all’interno della Scuola di architettura e design dell’Università di Camerino – che ha contribuito alla produzione della mostra e prestato alcune opere – attualizzano il tema di questi oggetti “non domestici” analizzando criticamente il concetto di casa come mediazione tra l’abitante e il suo modo di vivere, allargando i confini e misurando, in ultima istanza, la possibilità di immaginare un altro abitare.
