Well-Being and Creative City

12 - 23 September, 2016

Scuola di Architettura e Design (SAAD-UNICAM)

Sant’Angelo Magno -Ascoli Piceno (ITALY)

The city has always pushed for beauty. It is no coincidence that Lewis Mumford in the text “The culture of Cities” defines the city as the greatest work of man. The quality that is required from the city is not an intrinsic attribute of the various objects, but a feature resulting from the relationship between the space and the people that benefiting from it. The urban quality and the well-being are produced by knowledge of the city. If, until recently, beauty alone was considered sufficient to generate profit, culture and wellness, today the city has become a conscious experimentation laboratory. In this lab. is possible process ideas of change. The creative city is a place that is not limited to solving the crisis, but that anticipates crisis, by reformulating problems, giving itself new goals, creating new space configurations, assuring the well-being of its inhabitants. “Well- Being and Creative city is the theme of Equinox 2016.

The workshop 2016 is about the design of some areas of Ascoli Piceno due to be regenerated, namely: the Monticelli district, the brownfield of Castagneti and the area in between along the Tronto river, with important infrastructure: the railway and the SS Piceno Aprutina road.

The workshop has a duration of two weeks, from September 12 to 23, 2016. The two-week workshop will be organized as follows:

-A First Phase (first week), to define the knowledge of the areas through inspections, meetings with the local population, with the technicians and administrators in order to develop a "concept” of the study areas. This operation will allow students to develop critical skills regarding the themes and issues that will arise from the knowledge of the area. In parallel, in this first week, there will be some short presentations by scholars, about urban regeneration and some best practices to suggest possible solutions for the project.

-A Second Phase (second week) to define the project scenarios through the comparison between the different components of the design groups and the teaching staff in relation to the issues arising from the first week of work. This second phase will take place largely in the classroom. There will also be some brief reports of the scholars.

- A Final Phase of the project (at the end of the second week) will use different and original techniques and modes of representation and communication. The last day will be organized an exhibition and a happening at the "Annunziata" location.
