2020 INTERNATIONAL VELUX AWARD

The International VELUX Award (IVA) is a biennial ideas competition for students of architecture. It invites students from all over the world to create projects investigating the role of daylight in our everyday lives. The award has been endorsed by the UIA since 2004.

The theme of the 2020 edition is “Light of Tomorrow”. It seeks to challenge the future of daylight in the built environment with an open-minded and experimental approach. Its objective is to widen the boundaries of daylight in architecture, including aesthetics, functionality, sustainability, and the interaction between buildings and environment.

The International VELUX Award has enjoyed increasing numbers of participants since its inception in 2004. The last edition saw over 4 000 registered students and over 600 submitted projects from ambitious, innovative and thoughtful future architects.

CATEGORIES

Teams or individual future architects (assisted by an architecture professor from their accredited institution) may choose between two categories: Daylight in Buildings (“projects that demonstrate applicable principles for providing daylight and sunlight into buildings”)
and Daylight Investigations (“projects that look at the physical properties of light, basics of optics and materials, as well as technological developments, new materials, storage or transportation of daylight”). Multidisciplinary teams, including students in the domains of design, engineering and landscaping, are encouraged.

The jury will select 5 regional winners in each category, who will then progress to the final round, presenting their projects to the jury at the World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The jury will then select two global winners, one in each category.

CRITERIA

Projects are evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • The work with daylighting as a premise for architecture.
  • How the project is researched and documented.
  • How the project addresses contemporary and future challenges.
  • The level of experimentation and innovation.
  • The overall graphic presentation of the project, how the project presents itself.
